It’s likely that most of us have lost an item or two while on holiday – from phones to wallets to clothing, it’s all too easy to misplace things when we’re relaxing and enjoying the sunshine. But perhaps more common that this is forgetting to take something with us in the first place.
In fact, according to a recent survey conducted in the UK, more than half of holiday-makers have left behind a major item that they intended to take with them on their vacation.
The most commonly forgotten items were clothing, followed by sunglasses, which accounted for 15% of all items left behind. Even crucial things are often forgotten, with 10% of people leaving behind important medication or contraception.
So what happens when we forget something important? According to the research, 80% of people will buy a replacement, either at the airport or while they’re on vacation.
Of course the cost of replacing individual items will vary wildly, for example replacing a forgotten bottle of sunscreen will cost dramatically less than replacing your high-end Oliver Peoples sunglasses. But when it’s all added up, the average cost of a replacement is £27.35, or around $35. According to the team who completed the survey, that adds up to £179 million ($223 million) in total, and that’s just for the people of the UK!
So next time you’re heading off on holiday, think twice about what you may have left behind before you leave the house, as it might just save you some money when you arrive at your destination.
